YouTube – You aint got no pancake mix!
22 06 2010O.M.G. hilarity ensues! So far, this has been the most educated and well worded response to a “fire and brimstoner” that I’ve heard.

RIP RUE
3 06 2010So very sad. A friend of mine said it best on facebook…
“Rue McClanahan was a Southern liberal cat lover with questionable morals. In other words, one of my main role models as a young child. She will be missed.”

I’m Just Walkin’
29 05 2010I read an article about this guy the other day and decided to go to his website and check out his progress. I was entertained and intrigued. It amazed me how many people invited him into their homes or just stopped him on the street to give him money and food. It really reinforces ones faith in humanity.
Matt left New York in March and is walking his way to Oregon. Right now he is somewhere in Minnesota. Everyday he posts pictures and comments on his website from his phone. It’s fun to check in everyday and see what he’s been up to and to check out the people he has met. I highly recommend it!
GOOD LUCK MATT!!!

Should We Clone Neanderthals?
29 05 2010“Working with ancient DNA can be much more problematic than sequencing genetic material from
living species. Within hours of death, cells begin to break down in a process called apoptosis. The dying cells release enzymes that chop upDNA into tiny pieces. In a human cell, this means that the entire three-billion-base-pair genome is reduced to fragments a few hundred base-pairs long or shorter. TheDNA also goes through chemical changes that alter the nucleotides as it ages–C changes into T, and G turns into A–which can cause the gene sequence to be interpreted incorrectly.”
If the DNA is put back together incorrectly and THEN cloned, all sorts of weird things could essentially emerge. There is great creative potential for a book or movie from that tiny piece of the puzzle alone. lol Not to mention the obvious ethical issues to be pondered. Great article!

Generation Desperation
24 05 2010Text, rolling and tumbling inside exhausted, militant minds.
Hearts praying for prose,
While heads spew obscenities.
Wars of word,
Bubble under principles.
Fake facts twist,
Smoke-like spirals,
In and out,
Of nostrils burned by propaganda.
Each exhalation, an exasperation,
A desperation, to produce,
Something worth uttering.
A symbol of a psyche,
Burned across lips, chapped from mediocrity.
Yearning to say something intelligible gnawing at speech.
Voices hoarse from screaming,
For compromise and solidarity.
Finally silenced by alienation,
A nation
In pieces of greatness,
Afraid to unify,
By melding common thoughts,
Into coalesced actions.
Forced, instead, to witness…
Melancholy imbuing,
Faceless soldiers,
In faded colors,
Marching through hate filled streets.
Mud flung in mindless rebellion,
Like gun fire from philosophy,
Against a society of angry,
Angst filled,
Leaders.
Ignoring the pleas of the impoverished,
Persecuted masses.
Their upturned faces,
Burned by the sun,
And still they look to God.

Texas board adopts new social studies curriculum
22 05 2010This makes me physically ill. Education should be bipartisan. How can you indoctrinate students with a history that only serves a single interest group. ESPECIALLY when most of what they are purporting is HISTORICALLY inaccurate! Politicians should have no friggin’ say over what’s taught in school. Only the educators who have EDUCATION in their field should make those decisions.
“In final edits leading up to the vote, conservatives rejected language to modernize the classification of historic periods to B.C.E. and C.E. from the traditional B.C. and A.D. They also required that public school students in Texas evaluate efforts by global organizations such as the United Nations to undermine U.S. sovereignty.
McLeroy offered the amendment requiring students to evaluate efforts by global organizations including the U.N. to undermine U.S. sovereignty, saying they threatened individual liberty and freedom.
During the monthslong process of creating the guidelines, conservatives successfully strengthened the requirements on teaching the Judeo-Christian influences of the nation’s Founding Fathers and attempted to water down rationale for the separation of church and state. (SERIOUSLY?!)
The standards will refer to the U.S. government as a “constitutional republic,” rather than “democratic,” and students will be required to study the decline in the value of the U.S. dollar, including the abandonment of the gold standard.
Conservatives say the Texas history curriculum has been unfairly skewed to the left after years of Democrats controlling the board. (So let’s fix that by unfairly skewing it to the right!? Why don’t we teach what REALLY happened. The good and the bad of both sides. Idiots.)
Educators have blasted the proposed curriculum for politicizing education. Teachers also have said the document is too long and will force students to memorize lists of names rather than thinking critically.”

Today, Today
22 05 2010
History calls to me
from dark corners
from dusty books
cold fingers
of people long dead
grip at me
pulling me
slipping silently into a darkness
into a past
I couldn’t possibly remember
living it instead
through pictures
and texts
and memories of people so close to their grave
that days are the difference between ghosts
and the living
stories so real
you can see, taste, feel
the subjects
the difference between having lived
and having imagined
make plots thick as mud
but, real as this paper
I crave them to escape
into worlds so distant
and yet to near
reminding me of the things that happened
and the people who lived
to make
today…
today
and the past
the past.
